This is the large and resilient bovine of the Himalayas. It is found mainly in Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia, and the cold mountain ranges of Central Asia. Closely related to the domestic cow, its main feature is the long, dense coat that shields it from the intense cold.

Yaks reach sexual maturity at about 3 years of age. Early breeding can harm their health and longevity. They are highly adapted to harsh mountain conditions and food scarcity.
